Our traditional and contemporary Ndebele Doll range is handcrafted by rural Ndebele women who live mostly in remote areas of Southern Africa where there are very few job opportunities.
During courtship, a suitor will place a doll outside a young woman's hut, indicating his intention to propose marriage to her. When a young woman is preparing to marry, she is given a doll that she names and cares for. Her first child is then named for the doll.
The Ndebele are one of the smallest tribes in Southern Africa, and the women are one of the most colorful and distinctive in their dress and adornment. The beadwork worn during the different life stages indicates the individual’s status within the community at any given time.
